Anti Crime Unit Receives Prestigious Award

The Gambia Police Force’s Anti Crime Unit (ACU) has been awarded as the Most Outstanding Crime Control Service Unit in West Africa for the year 2018, by Security Watch Africa during its 15th Edition of Africa Security Watch Awards Conference & Exhibition in the Gambia held at the Labranda Coral Beach Resort in November 2018.
The event which was held under the theme ‘’effective leadership and good governance’’ brought together security experts from across the Africa to discuss the security challenges in Africa and suggest recommendations to tackle them.
According to Mr. Patrick Agbambu the international coordinator of Africa Security Watch Awards, the main objective of the conference is to discuss the way forward on the security challenges in Africa and also, to recognize those working hard in maintaining peace and order within the African society.
Receiving the Award on behalf of the Unit, the Commander of ACU, Assistant Commissioner of Police Gorgi L. Mboob expressed delight in receiving such a prestigious accolade.
He stated that, they are caught by surprise when news of the Award was broke to them given the number of nominees. ‘’ With this Award we feel proud and encouraged to do more in our relentless and unwavering stance against crime to preserve the welfare of the Gambian people, it further shows that our efforts are being recognized not only in the Gambia but across the West African sub region which is why I wish to take this opportunity to make a promise to the Inspector General of Police and the people of the Gambia, that ACU will surely receive another prestigious Award come 2019 ’’ he maintained.
The eventful night punctuated with colour, fashion and glamour was well attended by the Inspector General of Police Alhagie Mamour Jobe, Deputy Inspector General of Police Abdoulie Sanyang, Service Chiefs, Cabinet Ministers of the Gambia Government among hosts of prominent personalities including Rtd General Joseph Nunoo Mensah former Military Chief of Ghana who also doubles as Chairman Board of Trustees Security Watch Africa. Also, in attendance was Governors of states from Nigeria, traditional Kings, His Royal Highness Appolus Chu, Egbere Emere 1, Okori Eleme who was honored as the peace and development ambassador. Other awardees included the Minister of Interior Hon. Ebrima Mballow while the special award of the ceremony was given to His Excellency Mr. Adama Barrow President of the Republic of the Gambia for his exemplary national service in West Africa.
Since established in Apri018, with a mandate to combat all forms of crime and criminal activities throughout the country, the unit has succeeded in nabbing and prosecuting hundreds of suspected criminals in different courts. By end 2018, through constant day and night patrols about 143 cases were uncovered, out of which conviction was secured in 108 cases. While 16 cases are pending trial in court, 19 cases are currently under investigations at the unit. In all these cases about 382 individuals were involved out of which 347 individuals are already convicted and sentenced to mandatory jail terms or fines or both for offences ranging from theft, house/shop breaking and stealing, cattle theft, stealing from motor vehicle, robbery with violence, being in possession of suspected stolen property, conspiracy to commit felony, among others.
